Dr. Chen is an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and an ACT-based psychological counselor. She received her Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from Peking University.
How can we expand access to timely and effective mental health support when traditional specialist-delivered care cannot meet population-level needs? This is the overarching question that Dr. Chen’s research seeks to address. Her work examines how psychological support can better reach children and other populations who are often underserved by traditional mental health services. She studies the psychological and social processes that shape vulnerability, resilience, and engagement with support, with particular interest in how people move from recognizing a need for support to taking meaningful action.
Building on these mechanistic questions, her research explores new ways to extend the reach of early mental health support beyond specialist-delivered care. This includes emerging technologies such as AI-based companions for children facing adversity, as well as task-shifting approaches that equip social workers and community health workers to provide mental health and psychosocial support.
