The development of the psychology discipline at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) dates back to 2003. The University obtained the Master’s degree authorization for Psychology in 2011 and for Applied Psychology in 2014. In 2020, it obtained the authorization to confer Doctoral degrees in Psychology. In 2023, SJTU approved the establishment of the professional Doctoral program in Applied Psychology through its internal accreditation process.

On April 7, 2024, the School of Psychology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University was officially inaugurated, with Professor Fu Xiaolan, former Director of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, appointed as its first Dean.

Under the strategic framework of “AI+HI” (Artificial Intelligence plus Human Intelligence) of SJTU, the School has consolidated high-quality resources in psychology, advanced interdisciplinary integration, and carried out cutting-edge basic research, application-oriented transformation and comprehensive interdisciplinary studies. It also builds university-wide cross-disciplinary public service platforms. In August 2024, the School signed a cooperation agreement with Shanghai Mental Health Center, unveiling Jingwei Campus of the School of Psychology. In April 2025, the SJTU Institute of Chinese Cultural Psychology‌ (affiliated to the School of Psychology) was formally founded.

The School is committed to cultivate psychology professionals with global vision, solid academic foundations, humanistic quality and innovation capacity. It strives to strengthen psychological research and practice, improve mental-health services and talent education, and deliver targeted psychological solutions for public mental health and spiritual well-being.

Featuring “Psychology + AI” as its core strength, the School prioritizes three key research directions: Clinical and Health Psychology, Brain and Cognitive Science, and Management and Social Psychology. It promotes interdisciplinary teaching and research by integrating strengths of SJTU in Psychiatry, Biomedical Engineering, Brain Science, Clinical Psychology, Management, Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.

The School aims to consolidate an interdisciplinary research paradigm of “Large-scale Facilities-Big Science-Grand Health”, and build a distinctive psychology discipline deeply integrated with science, engineering, biomedicine and humanities.

Leveraging the Institute of Chinese Cultural Psychology‌ , the School fosters a “One Body, Two Wings” development framework of “Psychology + AI + Fine Traditional Chinese Culture” to pioneer innovative research paradigms in psychology.

Looking ahead, the School will focus on international frontiers and major national strategic demands, producing world-recognized research outputs and demand-driven applied products. Its long-term goal is to build an internationally-renowned, top-tier institute for psychological education, research and policy consultation.
